Powerful cross-platform file sharing
Xender is a cross-platform file sharing application, which uses a wireless connection to transfer files, pictures, music and videos at lightning speed. Not so long ago, Bluetooth was all the rage but Xender have taken advantage of the new technology which allows devices to create their own local WiFi network. This means no data charges and it is much faster than Bluetooth. In fact, Xender’s file transfers are 200 times quicker.
Xender uses the latest and greatest technology
Xender quickly became one of the most popular apps on the market, following their initial release on 1 June 2017. Within a few months they had millions of users. Popularity is not necessarily a sign of quality. Sometimes they are popular simply because they are popular. Xender’s success is due to the quality of its technology and ease-of-use. It just does the job better.
How does Xender work?
The program is enabled by using a local WiFi network. The Xender app can transfer files from mobile to mobile, mobile to PC and PC to mobile. The process varies slightly depending on which operating system you are using. The most straightforward way is transferring from Android to Android and the only cross-platform transfer you may find problematic is with iOS. Apple has notoriously strict rules when it comes to app downloads (for better and worse). As a result, transferring apps to and from iOS devices can be tricky but everything else works the same.
Android to android transfers are the easiest to do. First, activate your mobile hotspot and get the other mobiles (up to four devices can be synced at any one time) to connect to your hotspot. Second, open up the Xender app and tap the plus (+) icon and ‘Create Group’. From the other Android phones, tap the plus (+) icon and then ‘Join Group’. Next, you click on the ‘Group’ and you will be connected. That’s it. You are free to share your files now. The process is similar with all mobile operating systems.
Connecting mobile to PC is different but equally as easy and all operating systems follow the same steps. Make sure your mobile and the PC are on the same WiFi network. Tap the plus (+) icon in the Xender app and then choose ‘Connect PC’. Your phone’s camera will then be opened through which you scan the QR found at the developer’s website on your PC. They will then automatically pair.
Is my phone or PC compatible with Xender?
Xender can be used across a range of platforms and devices. In terms of mobile phones, you can use either Windows, iOS or Android. If you want to use a PC, it works with both Windows and Mac computers. The program is multiplatform too so you can send files from Android mobiles to iPhones, for example.
Are there any better alternatives to Xender?
There’s a lot of competition harnessing this file sharing technology. Shareit, Superbeam and Portal are just a few examples of other extremely popular apps in the space. Although they offer a similar service at heart (transferring files), they differ slightly when it comes to the look, functionality and user experience.
Superbeam looks very cool, for example. It has gone to town on the visual experience for users, which reminds you just how clever the technology is. Shareit is arguably at the top of the leaderboard, if you are just counting downloads, and Portal uses WiFi Direct (so you don’t need to be on the same local network) which has proven popular.
In spite of the many options out there, there are a number of reasons which have set Xender apart from the rest. The program is simple and well-built, it is free, there are no adverts and it works across multiple platforms in up to 30 languages. While many other apps will do some of these things, none will offer all of them. Xender also has regular bug updates. One bug which needs fixing is that it closes periodically (which is really annoying if you’re listening to music through the application) but this will get sorted on the next update no doubt.
A simple but powerful file transfer tool
Since this technology space has become available, apps have popped up to take advantage of it. There are no household names yet and there are many file transfer apps to pick from. You can certainly rule out all of those still using Bluetooth or other near field communication technologies. From the outside it can be hard to choose between the apps: they all seem to be doing the same thing!
While it is true that there are many apps using local wireless connection to transfer files, if you dig a little deeper it is possible to distinguish between them. Xender may seem simple compared to the other apps. It has just compacted the best of file sharing potential into the greatest range of operating systems with multiple connections available. The program is a mere 4.5 MB after the latest update which makes downloading it a breeze.
The program is actually not-so-simple but they’ve made it look easy and effortless, without going too overboard on the aesthetics. The result is a nice, clean design which works for everyone. Plus, who really cares about having graphics of radars scanning for devices or satisfying representations of them when they are connected? That is a slim area to focus on at best. People want what Xender has: a simple and easy-to-use interface which is completely intuitive. In short, it does what it says on the tin.
What is the final verdict on Xender?
If you are looking for a file sharing application then go for Xender. It is really not worth sacrificing any of Xender’s functionality for some unnecessary bells and whistles. Equally, some apps have slipped in either a premium service option, adverts or some other money-making feature. This may give the allusion that you will be getting more but that rarely the case, at least nothing relevant to the main purpose of the app. For example, lot of apps have made the ability to add more than one connection to a transfer into a premium service. Don’t fall for it! It’s free on Xender.
