Premium fantasy TD experience
WitchCraft TD is a paid strategy game from unikotoast. This tower defense experience features a refreshing combination of fantasy elements in a retro 8-bit aesthetic, complete with chiptune music. In this game, you open an ancient portal and must defend your crystal from the monsters. It has over 30 tower models you can build with simple controls and a roguelike.
Overall, WitchCraft TD is a good TD game that takes the strengths of the genre and is limited only by its retro art style, which comes with limited resolution and animation. You can also try Bloons TD 6.
Defend your crystal from monsters
For starters, the retro appeal from WitchCraft TD is both its strength and weakness. On one side, it immediately appeals to players who grew up with the 8-bit and 16-bit video games from decades past. On the other hand, it robs the game of animation and design possibilities, especially as you discover new towers with entirely new abilities. This disappointment applies to the towers, the projectiles, and even the enemies.
On the plus side, this retro appeal is not just for show. It only requires a storage size of about 200 MB and even runs on dated and low-class devices. Also, it only has two controls: one for summoning towers and another for removing and selling them. As you eliminate monsters, you gain access to new towers, and should you need money, you can sell existing ones.
Lastly, the roguelike and randomized elements make the game harder than the average TD game. Generally, you can build towers and just save enough to buy or upgrade to the next one. In this game, however, selling towers to meet the challenge is a necessity, requiring more planning. You even have to account for randomness in terms of enemy spawn, forcing you to familiarize yourself with different strategies.
Challenging and unpredictable
If you’re a fan of tower defense games, WitchCraft TD is a great entry. It doesn’t linearly scale in difficulty, unlike most games that allow you to get accustomed to them. Here, expect to learn strategies the hard way especially since certain game elements are randomized. Also, the retro approach of the game is definitely divisive, it’s accurate but limits the visual potential of the game. Still, it’s recommended.
