Premium wrestling game for the new generation
WWE 2K22 is a premium wrestling game from 2K. In this action-packed sports experience, you get to experience the classic franchise in an all-new game engine–giving you an updated graphic and animation experience. The developers have also overhauled the rest of the game, with controls and game modes reflecting the changes in the World Wrestling Entertainment.
If you’re looking to find out yourself what sets WWE 2K22 from its predecessors, feel free to check WWE 2K20 and WWE 2K19. For non-WWE wrestling games, you can try Total Extreme Wrestling or Fire Pro Wrestling World.
New superstars, new careers to follow
Fans of the longstanding franchise were probably disappointed when, for the first time in two decades, the popular wrestling property did not release a 2K21 iteration. The developers are definitely making it up with WWE 2K22. Its redesigned gameplay engine now lets you view certain points of the match from various camera angles. Also, it now has an updated roster, letting you play your favorite wrestlers, as well as legends.
Additionally, the game returns with 2K Showcase Mode: a story-driven, single-player campaign that puts you in the shoes of a superstar on the rise. This time, you 619 your way to the top as Rey Mysterio. Unfortunately, fans are divided on the most important matches in the cruiserweight wrestler’s career. For one, Kurt Angle wasn’t in the roster although the late Eddie Guerrero is–showing that players won’t have it all.
While the animation, graphics, and gameplay have all improved, the game still suffers from a couple of issues. Online matchmaking makes it difficult to connect to online multiplayer games. Also, while the General Manager (GM) Mode has made its return, it was surprisingly narrower in scope. There are fewer superstars to choose from during your draft period and the belts available were also reduced.
An acceptable return of the franchise
With its positive overhaul in terms of gameplay mechanics, graphics, animation, and roster, WWE 2K22 is a promising return for WWE gaming fans especially as they skipped with what should’ve been 2K21. Still, the game suffers from unnecessary changes made from previous entries such as the unsteady online server and the apparently reduced GM Mode. Of course, a patch or downloadable content (DLC) could change all that. Recommended.
