A free VN about furry demons and boring jobs
Where the Demon Lurks is a free adventure video game wherein you get to play as a bored Demon Lord of the Underworld. Developed by Bokedaidu, this story-rich indie visual novel is a comedic interactive fiction filled with LGBT representation, furry fanservice, lovely art, and magical hijinks.
Similar to Love Goes Toward Love, Where the Demon Lurks is a mostly kinetic kind of visual novel, in which there aren’t a lot of branching paths that require your choice to unlock different endings. The story is pretty much easy to follow—although take note that this version is only the demo.
The Underworld needs a ruler
In Where the Demon Lurks, you play as the reluctant heir to the throne of the Underworld who inherited the position from your father, as is tradition. Unfortunately, the job of a Demon Lord doesn’t get any easier, even after five years. You decide to take an impromptu vacation and reinvigorate yourself—however, things don’t exactly go great once you return to your job.
The story itself is interesting enough, with the writing being quite compelling despite not allowing you to customize your character. You can name yourself whatever you wish but your character is set as a male anthropomorphic lion demon. What’s interesting about this VN is that it uses second-person POV to narrate the story—allowing you to get immersed into the plot.
However, the main failing of it is that the time skips in this demo aren’t really fleshed out. The gaps can be pretty long in-between each scene and there’s no exposition to paint just what happened to the cast to give the skips more meaning. It’s good enough for a short demo, though, and the cliffhanger really intrigues you into trying out the full version.
A great sampler
All in all, Where the Demon Lurks is an interesting furry visual novel to check out. While the pacing of the demo doesn’t give it enough meat for exposition to address time skips, the writing and art are still pretty great and you’re just immediately immersed in the Demon Lord’s struggles. If you’re looking for indie LGBT furry games, this is a title you can try out.
