Retro FPS in the 40K universe
Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is a premium action game from Auroch Digital and Focus Entertainment. This is a retro first-person shooter (FPS) set in the massive Warhammer 40K universe. You are put in the armor of a Space Marine assigned to the longstanding war against the daemons, including your former brothers in the Chaos Space Marine corps.
With an aesthetic reminiscent of classic FPS like DOOM 95 or Dusk, Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is a love letter to the action games of old. Expect a fast-paced, action-packed experience complete with gore sprites. Be warned of its steep difficulty level, though.
A fun addition to the video game franchise
Most games in the Warhammer 40K property are tabletop games and strategy games, much like Warhammer 40,000: Regicide. However, Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is a fun addition to the variety of 40K games already available, now expanding into the retro FPS scene. As such, expect the dated visual style that is making a return. It does the purpose of simplifying and bringing 40K characters to a new market.
It retains the basic elements of the sci-fi fantasy franchise. So expect tons of gore, although rendered in pixelated brutality, and a twisting storyline that works for both new and existing fans of 40K lore. As a Space Marine, you get to enjoy unique weapons like the small yet powerful Boltgun, as well as the intimidating Chainsword. This arsenal works well with the variety of enemies available in the game.
As such, it comes with a mature tag, meaning it’s not suitable for younger audiences on account of its violence and mature themes. Other than that, it also comes with quite an unforgiving difficulty level. New players might have to fail a couple of times before getting used to the gameplay and style this game has to offer. It is rewarded by an impressive story, though.
Kick daemons across the universe
Overall, Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is a promising addition to the already-massive 40K franchise. By returning to the roots of the FPS action subgenre, it creates a refreshing experience that caters to a wider audience. Additionally, it makes use of key elements in the lore to create a riveting story. Once you get used to its difficulty level, it’s a pretty rewarding experience.
