An interesting block-style game!

Unturned is a popular retro-style game in the sandbox category. Considering the graphics and features, it has the perfect blend of Minecraft and Day-Z. Focusing on the zombie survival game genre, this one comes with various action-packed sequences and tasks. While the blocky style makes the game look similar to other sandbox adventures, it features several new items, tasks, and skills. In Unturned, you’re forced into an apocalyptic situation, where you’re the lone survivor among hordes of zombies. Without much help and props, you need to roam around the world looking for weapons, transport, and supplies.

An action-packed zombie survival game!

Developed by Nelson Sexton, the Founder of Smartly Dressed Games, Unturned is a zombie survival game. In a post-apocalyptic setting, the game focuses on the gameplay from Day-Z with the visual appeal of Roblox. Overall, it tries to create a unique experience for gamers interested in retro-style graphics and fast-paced action sequences. Simply put, it’s an easily accessible and simple survival simulator.

What is Unturned’s objective?

The game starts with the character stranded on PEI or Prince Edward Island. While you can choose to play the game along, Unturned gives you the option to join a server and fight zombies in a team. Scattered across the island, most of the zombies are clustered around valuable loot in cities. While it’s easy to sneak around a few, large groups can be deadly. Moreover, there’s a Player vs Player mode, where your counterparts can be as deadly as the zombies.

Apart from other players and zombies, the game features several other dangerous elements. For instance, you need to constantly monitor hunger, dehydration, stamina, blood, and immunity. Fortunately, the game comes with a comprehensive crafting system and focus on community, which allows you to create tools, build bases, and protect buildings.

Is Unturned easy to play?

Like most games in this category, Unturned features basic FPS controls. You can use the ‘WASD’ keys for movement, while crawling, ducking, and running conveniently bound around these keys. Similarly, you’ll find the shooter elements quite familiar. The game features mouse-controlled targeting, which feels incredibly natural in a randomized world.

While you start the game with an empty inventory, you can explore huge maps in the block-style world to gather important weapons and items. Throughout the game, zombies come quite close to you, even when you’re travelling in different vehicles. Without the right kind of weapons to protect yourself, it can be quite hard to survive.

In order to find the right items, you need to sprint through a huge world, going through valuable loot while sneaking around hordes of zombies. As a result, you encounter several chaotic and maddening situations. Even small mistakes can get you killed in the game, and you’d have to start the journey all over again.

While the game focuses on action-packed sequences, night visuals can be too dark. At times, it’s hard to maneuver your way through zombies under the moon. There’s also the issue of a cluttered interface, which keeps you from scoring points or looting valuables with ease. Having said that, for a free game in this genre, Unturned does a good job of keeping you engaged and entertained.

Is Unturned an action game?

While Unturned comes with a simple and straightforward Minecraft-like visual appeal, it offers various scalable options to provide you with action sequences. For instance, you can easily add water effects, expand the draw distance, use lighting, cut shadows, and more. Overall, Unturned lets you give an incredibly amazing look to the blocky world.

The default landscape is colorful and chunky, and comes with scattered towns, golf courses, and military bases. While roaming around cities, you’ll find plenty of valuable items being guarded by ferocious zombies. It won’t be wrong to say that Unturned is a vicious, fast-paced indie survival game. While the action sequences look inspired by GTA Vice City and Garry’s Mod, the materials and weapons ensure a unique experience.

Though the structure feels similar to several other survival games, this one comes with a large number of servers to play with multiple users. Unfortunately, the game doesn’t come with a built-in browser, and the speed of connections will depend on your existing network. In order to improve the in-game experience, you can team up with friends to fight hordes of zombies and build fortified bases around the ‘world’. Smartly Dressed Games has been releasing frequent updates to improve the development architecture, mechanics and appearance.

Since the game takes inspiration from Day-Z’s sequences and elements like stamina, hunger, dehydration, and more, it’s already action-packed and fast-paced. With numerous interesting and engaging sequences, you can play the game for hours without getting bored. The availability of a wide range of maps lets you explore a dangerous ‘world’ for hours in one go. It’s worth mentioning that the loot is easier to find, but always guarded by zombies looking for blood.

While most of the elements in Unturned have been tried in other games and versions of sandbox offerings, it still feels refreshing and interesting. Since the game is free, you don’t have to worry about registrations or subscriptions. Once you download and install the game, you can start playing it from the get-go. Though the interface looks cluttered in the beginning, you get used to the controls pretty quickly.

A good choice for a fast-paced adventure!

With several unique experiences, Unturned is an easily accessible, simple, and engaging survival simulator for Windows 7 and 10. If you’re fine with the low production value and cluttered interface, it will keep you entertained without much trouble. Since the early access to the game is completely free, it’s definitely worth a download. Moreover, it won’t be wrong to expect a few more feature upgrades soon. Overall, among all the sandbox game downloads on Steam workshop, this one is a good choice.
