Relaxing PC game of cellular evolution

Unicellular is a free simulation title for PC developed by an indie developer who goes by the name winterdrake. It is a sandbox game wherein players will take control of a small cell as they grow and evolve by consuming others within a large space.

Similar in concept to games like Osmos or Mitos.is, Unicellular pits players against the dangers of a hostile environment. They will encounter various dangerous and often larger cells that they will need to avoid to increase their chances of survival, all while consuming smaller ones to help them grow stronger.

Against all odds

Evolution games, particularly those of the cellular kind, offer some rather interesting experiences. There was just something about the challenge of starting out small and vulnerable as you try to survive the dangers and challenges of a hostile environment, and slowly grow stronger. There haven’t been that many new releases for them, but there are still a few smaller titles being made, and Unicellular is one of them.

This game is a simple and unassuming game that features a minimalist art style and graphics. Control a blue-colored cell with your mouse, and start consuming smaller cells to grow. There are two enemy types to be aware of here. The first is the green ones that are passive and just go about their way. The second is the red ones that are more aggressive and will attack you on sight.

Once you reach a certain size, you will then be able to evolve and be given special traits and abilities as a result. Some of them include increased maneuverability, the ability to sprint for a short period, and many others. Before diving in, just be aware that gameplay is rather short. Depending on how you play, a typical playthrough will only last you a few minutes at the most.

Potential for growth

Overall, Unicellular is a charming and relaxing game that pretty much anyone can enjoy. It’s not as exciting or as complex as other games, but it’s not trying to be. New content can be added in future updates to keep things fresh and interesting, but as it is now, it is still definitely worth giving a try if you like these types of games.
