Free location-based augmented reality RPG

The Witcher: Monster Slayer is a role-playing game that is a spin-off of the Witcher franchise. Free to download and play, the game will have you hunt and fight monsters. What’s more, it uses augmented reality so you can watch the fights on your smartphone.

Like popular ARGs, such as Pokemon Go and Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, Monster Slayer based the maps on the space you see in real life. With this, you will have to move around to find monsters. However, instead of cute Pokemons, expect to see monsters in your backyard. Moreover, the combat is more challenging

There are monsters in your city

The Witcher: Monster Slayer challenges players to become the best monster hunter. In the game, endless monsters are lurking in every corner, and as a Witcher, it is your duty to hunt them down. The catch, the game utilizes augmented reality and uses real-life location as its map. You need to move around your location to find the monsters. Who knows, you might find a water hag in your backyard.

When you come across these creatures, the AR view will open up. Then, the attack will commence. The battles are quick and intuitive and involve blocking and slashing. The bigger the monsters, the longer the fights are. However, while combat is easy to grasp, the battles can be unexpectedly difficult. Luckily, you don’t lose anything, and you can try again as many as you like.

More than the combat, Monster Slayer also boasts great art design. Since it is a spin-off, it has the same atmosphere as the Witcher media. The visuals are also note-worthy, from the ARG segments to the comic book-style cutscenes. Also, instead of aimlessly looking for monsters,  you will follow the main story quest line. However, expect a lot of moving around as the waypoints are sometimes too far from home.

Bottom line

If you are a Witcher fan, then The Witcher: Monster Slayer is definitely worth checking out. The game has an appealing art design, visual flair, and good combat for a mobile ARG. It also offers a campaign that is challenging to complete. However, it requires players to devote significant time and effort to progress. It is not a game for passing the time.
