Free real-time tower defense game

The Next War is a real-time strategy tower defense game by an independent developer, lpotamianos. The game is designed for the next Spectrum and all other compatible versions. It is generally a slow-paced strategy game. As the stakes get higher though, the more exciting moments there will be; position up to 35 defensive turrets on the frontline to protect the city from the relentless assault of enemy forces.

Build your turrets and win the war!

Next War is a strategy game where you take part in the play-versus-environment gameplay. The game is presented from a third-person perspective, where you control the troops in battle. You will begin in a barren setting, so you will need to build your turrets, recruit your subjects, and set up an army that will increase the population of your kingdom. As for war, the game takes on a strategic automated battle.

You must work on separating your turret’s elements, appoint appropriate warriors, and produce necessary resources. You must use the expertise you have learned to customize the warrior’s powers, weapons, and other aspects to bolster your military force on the battlefield. Each fighter has a specific strategy and skill to fight and must prepare the troops before the battle, paying more attention to strategies and coordinating fighters, increases your chances of dominating on the battlefield.

Control-wise, the game allows customizable keyboard buttons, joystick, and PS/2 mouse – which the developer highly recommends. In their default settings, the keys are Q, A, O, and P to move the cursor, spacebar to select, and Z to cancel the selection. You can use joysticks or joypads with two fire keys (use the second button to cancel the range) as well if you prefer that control scheme. Otherwise, the keyboard will work perfectly fine.

Casual yet action-packed indie game

The Next War is a perfect choice for fans of strategy games. As a single-player game, PVE game mechanics can keep you engaged for hours. You can start playing right away once you’ve begun the game as there is really not much that you need in order to learn how to play it. In addition, you have various control schemes to find which you’re most comfortable with – which should give you an advantage in any battle.
