Dark fantasy deck-building roguelike RPG

Tainted Grail: Conquest is a premium role-playing title for PC by developer Awaken Realms Digital. It is a deck-building RPG with roguelike elements. In it, players are undead warriors seeking salvation, and the way to achieve that is by slaying unholy demons and creatures that litter the world.

A cross between Diablo III’s dark fantasy setting with Slay the Spire’s deck-building gameplay, Tainter Grail: Conquest offers an experience that is the best of both worlds. It also has multiple character classes to choose from and unlockable permanent abilities that will carry over for every run.

A restless nightmare

Tainted Grail: Conquest is set on the Isle of Avalon. One day, you wake up in a daze to the sight of a man-goat creature that informs you the world has ended. You mysteriously survived and are now stuck between life and death. Choose from nine character classes, figure out what caused the destruction of everything, and stop it from happening in order to save everyone.

You start in a twisted version of your village surrounded by dark and fog-like energy known as the Wyrdness. Venture out to find and defeat four bosses to save the world. You’re equipped with Wyrdcandles that help light your path but have short wicks. They also affect the randomized cards in battles, with higher or lower flames resulting in positive or negative effects, respectively.

Combat is turn-based, and there are 460 cards, 340 passive abilities, and 50 class masteries to unlock and create unique builds with. There are also various quests to take on and other survivors to encounter, whom you can take back with you to your village. However, despite this, the game can still feel repetitive after a while. Also, some grinding is expected, but it’s a bit too much here.

Embrace the Wyrd

All in all, if you’re a fan of roguelikes and deck-building games, Tainted Grail: Conquest is worth checking out. It offers solid turn-based combat, multiple character classes, and a lot of card types and abilities to help you create different builds. The grim fantasy setting and the art style are also standout aspects. This one’s good and you should give it a try. Recommended.
