A remastered turn-based classic
Tactics Ogre: Reborn is a premium role-playing game that remakes the 2010 Square Enix title, Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together, which in turn is a remake of a much older 1995 game. In doing so, it updates the game mechanics and presents smoother animation and clearer, crisper graphics while retaining its super-deformed (SD) and retro-styled graphics.
By remaking the classic NES game once more, Tactics Ogre: Reborn reclaims its position as a timeless turn-based strategy game for a new generation of players. It creates a unique feel separate from Sid Meier’s Civilization VI or Europa Universalis IV.
Reliving a timeless classic
The first thing to note and perhaps the most obvious thing to expect from Tactics Ogre: Reborn is its timeless story, now remastered for modern devices. It is set in The Valerian Isles, which entered a period of warfare after the death of its last “Dynast-King.” Once more, you follow the story of Denam Panel, who carves his own path and ultimately works to end the civil war.
As a remastered game, expect fully remastered graphics that result in crisper and more vivid visuals. Still, it retains its signature pixel art JRPG-style visual. Additionally, fans can now enjoy updated and fully voiced cutscenes, available in both English and Japanese. It also includes a high-resolution re-recording of the original soundtrack, plus the original chiptune music as a bonus. All these elements make the story-driven adventure more immersive.
However, while fans of the franchise will definitely enjoy reliving their memories with the franchise, the same can’t be said for newcomers. While it’s fun, challenging, and immersive all at the same time, remember that this game set the trend for the entire Tactics Ogre franchise being notoriously difficult. It can make most fights too detailed, and too dragging, compared to their contemporaries.
Top-tier tactics for the new generation
If you’re looking for anime-style artwork, an immersive story, and a heavily story-driven progression, Tactics Ogre: Reborn is the game for you. It has a steep learning curve, the same as the games it was based on. Enjoy the timeless story, now with a lot more add-on content on top of remastering the original material. For RPG and tactics fans, this is a definite must-try.
