Free Sonic the Hedgehog parody game
Sunky The Game is a free-to-play adventure that is a parody of the hit Sega property Sonic the Hedgehog. Developed by LooneyDude, you play as the titular Sunky, a low-quality version of the familiar blue hedgehog as he goes around collecting golden rings across various stages.
Of course, in terms of gameplay, Sunky the Game is largely similar to its inspiration Sonic the Hedgehog. It can also be compared to other unofficial fan-made arcade games like Mari0 since both take heavy inspiration from an existing game and add comical effects to them.
Help Sunky do things
The first thing players will notice with Sunky the Game is the low-quality attempts to reproduce the designs of the characters and stages from the original Sonic property, including the usual enemies and even the game’s big bad, Dr. Robotnik. Despite its simplistic, 90s era aesthetic, the backgrounds are animated and they help create a weird, funny feel for the entire game.
Then, in blatant opposition to the original, Sunky moves very slowly. This is the opposite of how Sonic runs fast in video games. Sunky also can’t jump high, but will conveniently extend his arms to climb platforms. Also, most traps in the game appear to conveniently avoid harming your character, making the first stages unusually easy to finish. This comes across as boring for some players looking for action.
Story-wise, it also follows the same story of Sunky trying to stop Dr. Robotnik from taking over the world. It doesn’t reflect much in the game, except for the final part’s showdown. It’s the only part in the game that offers a slight challenge to players. You have to rush to an escape pod that will carry you to safety, avoiding spikes that don’t kill Sunky but slow him down.
Just for fun
As a parody game, it’s hard to expect a serious story or gameplay elements from Sunky the Game. It’s Sonic the Hedgehog tossed through a hilarious filter. It does, however, deliver in terms of fun and entertainment value. If you appreciate the humor that comes with the intentionally bad graphics and the awkwardly easy gameplay, this game is a must-try for those precious minutes of fun.
