Gotta Go Fast
Sonic the Hedgehog is a popular Japanese platformer video game series and media franchise created by Sonic Team and owned by Sega. The whole series centers on Sonic, an anthropomorphic blue hedgehog who battles the evil Doctor Eggman, a mad scientist. Following its success, the franchise came to spawn various spin-offs that featured other gameplay genres, such as racing, fighting, party, and sports genres. Sonic the Hedgehog came to collaborate with other Sega games and formed the Sega All-Stars, a series of crossover video games that mostly centered on sports—and for the racing genre, Sega All-Stars spawned Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, which upped the ante in kart racing by allowing you to race in transforming vehicles. When compared to the popular Mario Kart series, Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed can definitely still compete.
Gotta Go Faster
In Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, you get to race against over 20 legendary All-Stars—the various characters of Sega’s games—by using a kart, a boat, and a plane. Unlike other kart racing games, Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed’s 25 maps and arenas make use of dynamic changes as you race through them. You won’t be looping around the same scenery for three laps. In this game, the tracks will give way to water, and then to the wide-open sky, and something is always happening in the background. As such, your karts will morph into boats and planes that are different in how they’re supposed to be handled, adding more challenges to the driving part. A classic feature to be found here is power pick-ups and weapons you can wield to gain an edge on the race. Don’t worry, though, as they are all still quite balanced. More, much of the race will depend on your skill on the road. There are various modes, as well, such as the World Tour, the Grand Prix, and the Battle Arenas, and you can play this in local co-op for up to four players in split-screen or up to 10 players in online multiplayer. This collection includes Metal Sonic and Ryo Hazuki from Shenmue as playable characters.
May the Fastest Win
At first glance, you would think that Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is just another kart racing game that happens to have Sonic and his Sega pals as playable characters. However, this game offers much more and is arguably even more challenging than most racing games due to its mechanics. There was a lot of love poured into crafting the game, making soundtracks and maps that are references to Sega’s most beloved titles. While you might find something difficult in the game, it can at least be guaranteed that Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed isn’t just another racing game with shiny graphics and cool cars.
