Sinhala is derived from the Sanskrit word sînâla, which means “the son of the sun,” a name derived from the myth of the sun as a god. The literal meaning of sînâla is “sun’s son,” but it is often interpreted as “the son of the Moon,” as the moon is often regarded as the supreme god in Indian religion.
