It’s no surprise that most of us who use the Internet every day can get a bit lazy. We visit the sites we like, use the ones we need, and probably ignore about 80% of the content out there.

Isn’t it about time we broadened our horizons?

Similar Web is an easy-to-use Firefox add-on that suggests new websites and articles to you on the basis of the page you are currently viewing.

It makes these suggestions in a vertical bar in your browser, with each suggestion accompanied by a thumbnail and its name. Rolling over the thumbnail will give you a brief description of what it contains.

To go to one of the suggestions you just click on it, or right click to see options for opening it in a new tab or page. Similar Web is an intelligent add-on, learning about your tastes as you use it.

To let it know how it’s doing, you vote for or against each of the suggestions, and hopefully, over time, it will start giving you more personalized results.

If the side bar is too intrusive for you, Similar Web can be minimized to a cute little mini-mode, which practically makes it invisible.

Another nice feature is that instead of viewing related articles and pages, you can view buzz from Twitter, which is a nice touch of web 3. 0 functionality.

Despite this, Similar Web still isn’t very flexible. There are precious few configuration options and no extra functions, such as a search or sharing feature.

Similar Web is a nice tool, and might well introduce you to some cool new websites, but it just goes to show that a major update doesn’t always mean a major improvement.
