Free antiquity mod for AOE: II Definitive Edition
Romae ad Bellum Mod is a free-to-use game utility created by modder Caesar3842. As a total conversion mod for the real-time strategy game, Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, brings the player to the Classical Era but in stunning 4K quality. Choose from over a dozen civilizations such as the Romans, the Phoenicians, Goths, Huns, and more.
While the gameplay engine is the same as the vanilla version, the content is a great throwback to the original Age of Empires game, making it a must-have for fans of the franchise. Other games in the franchise include
Age of Empires III.
Play with updated graphics
Fans of the franchise would immediately see the effort that Romae ad Bellum Mod makes in bringing the Age of Empire civilizations into the AOE II Definitive Edition engine. Whereas the base game is focused on the Middle Ages, this mod reintroduces the civilizations from antiquity. By using the high-resolution graphics of the Definitive Edition remake, players can appreciate a new host of custom unit models and textures.
It goes without saying that each of the custom civilizations in the mod stays true to the Age of Empire mechanics, more than the stunning looks. Each of them has its unique bonuses, technologies, and units. For example, the Athenians regain the Hoplite unique infantry unit as well as the accelerated University progress. Meanwhile, the Romans have their Legionaries and Praetorian Guards, with bonus attack speed for the siege Scorpion.
Of course, there are certain restrictions that slightly affect the mod’s attempt at historical accuracy. While there are no gunpowder units yet, certain crossbowmen units are given the same stats as the Hand Cannoneer from the base game. Also, while each civilization has four unique technologies, only one is available for each of the late-game ages. After getting used to this gameplay, however, it’s all fun and classical warfare.
A definite AOE must-have
As the AOE franchise proves its timelessness with the 20th anniversary Definitive Edition, old and new players will definitely appreciate the Romae ad Bellum Mod. Whether it’s a remake of the old Rome at War mod or a remastered attempt at bringing the first Age of Empires game to modern players, the extent of this total conversion is simply impressive. Highly recommended.
