NextSense Auslan Tutor: A video-based teaching application for Australian Sign Language
NextSense Auslan Tutor is an Android application developed by the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children in the category of Education & Reference. It is a video-based Australian Sign Language (Auslan) teaching application designed to assist families with young deaf children to learn Auslan. It includes over 500 Auslan signs, each demonstrated multiple times in single signs, phrases, and sentences. The application moves beyond the basic premise of teaching individual signs by including five corresponding entries for each sign, which are a photo of the handshape used to form the sign, a video clip demonstrating the single sign, a video clip of the sign used in a phrase, a video clip of the phrase used in a sentence, and a text note about Auslan grammar that is pertinent to the sign, phrase, or sentence. NextSense Auslan Tutor is available in both Auslan Northern and Southern dialects, and features a sign search, Auslan alphabet, Auslan numbers, categories, and related signs. Developed by staff at NextSense in consultation with expert Auslan users, the application is a valuable tool for improving the user’s understanding and use of Auslan.
Please note that Auslan Tutor 2 is now available, and all updates and new features will be added to it instead of Auslan Tutor 1.
