A souls-lite action side-scroller for PC

Return – Alpha is a free adventure game created by developer Dead Unicorn for PC. It’s a souls-lite 2D side-scroller based on the dev’s entry to the Alberta Game Jam 2020 called Return, aiming to expand and build upon its base gameplay to a full-fledged action release.

Return – Alpha features a pixel art style similar to that of Dead Cells, combined with the post-apocalyptic/cyberpunk leanings of something like CARRION to create a unique and action-packed adventure. It also incorporates survival elements into its gameplay that adds another layer of challenge and unpredictability for players. However, it’s still a demo.

Is it any good?

In Return – Alpha, your home planet is on the brink of collapse. To survive, you set out in search of another colonized planet. Being in cryo-sleep during the journey, your ship encounters an error and its auto-pilot returns home for repairs. Upon waking up and realizing what happened, you are now forced to fend for yourself as you explore and search for parts to repair your ship.

This game boasts of hand-drawn pixel art that tries to meld nature and technology for most of its background elements and presentation, lending itself well to its post-apocalyptic theme. You will be exploring this unfamiliar landscape and have various encounters with both potential allies and enemies. Purchase and unlock weapons to help you through your journey, or upgrade your favorite one to carry you through fights.

You will also be able to discover hidden areas that house treasures containing money and resources to help you survive. Now, one important thing to note before you give this game a try is that it’s just a Demo of the planned full game. It is still very much in the early stages of development and its developer has no set release date yet.

An intriguing post-apocalyptic side-scroller

So far, Return – Alpha is shaping up to be a rather interesting side-scrolling adventure. It features a post-apocalyptic setting, stylish hand-drawn pixel art, and survival elements for added challenge. If its limited demo gameplay is anything to go by, it will please fans of the genre and will be worth keeping tabs on for future news and updates.
