Rule your kingdom with a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’
Stay in power as a reigning monarch as long as possible in the hit game Reigns available right now on Mac and PC from the Steam distribution network, and on Android and iOS. Enjoy the simple and revolutionary art direction in this game that’s incredibly deep and thought provoking.
Make your own story
Reigns is an effort to rule your kingdom for as long as possible. This is done by finding a balance among the four pillars of your kingdom: your people, your army, the church and the treasury. You, as the player, is faced with a never ending series of decisions to make and each decision has serious repercussions. Depending on how you decide to rule, you might become a good ruler, or a ruler that clenches his reign tightly with an iron fist. Each request comes in the form of a card and you, playing the ruler, must decide if how to deal with the situation with a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer. The consequences are nothing but simple, however, and different paths will unlock different cards for you to decide on. Each decision will lead, ultimately, to your death and the end of your Reign. The goal of the game is to make your king as long lived as possible, by whatever means you can conceive.
Well-combined design and music
One of the most interesting things about Reigns is the art direction. Extremely simple, 2d art cards with almost geometric character designs making requests are swept either right or left, depending on how you answer their request. The music has more depth than the art, the score composed of haunting melodies and appropriate sound effects to fit the mood of every request. Does an assassin slip a poisonous snake into your bed chamber? There’s suitably dire music. How about the love of your life asking to run away with you? The romantic score associated with that event perfectly sets the mood. In this way the simple art, dire consequences and excellent music all work together to make a fantastic game experience.
Make your choices… if you can
Reigns is not for everyone. The simple art design and simple gameplay doesn’t present itself as a AAA title with explosive graphics and deep gameplay. What you will find, however, is deceptive depth in that every choice that you make has positive and negative consequences that will impact the length of your King’s life in sometimes very subtle, sometimes very obvious, ways. Managing the buildup of all these consequences is where the challenge lies and there if given the chance, you’ll find yourself answering the yes or no questions long into the night.
