A new and improved Half-Life 2 mod
Raising the Bar: Redux is a free mod developed by the RTB Redux Team that reimagines the first-person shooter Half-Life 2: Episode Two. This adventure lets you return to City 17, the dystopian metropolitan area featured in the original game, but with a changed weapon and combat system. This makes it feel like a different game altogether, although you get to meet the same characters and follow the same story.
If you’re looking for a reason to revisit Half-Life 2 (HL2), Raising the Bar: Redux is more than enough. Similarly, you can also check out Half-Life: Half-Life 2: Classic Mod.
Same levels, all-new feels
What makes Raising the Bar: Redux a fascinating mod is that it takes existing maps from the HL2 game’s Division 2 arc and reinvents it. For starters, there are changes in the lighting of certain areas that sets a different mood. This also works well with the enemy spawn and position overhaul, since the new maps will have your combined enemies focused on lesser locations.
Additionally, the game modifies a lot of weapons with a focus on particular mechanics. This includes your melee stunstick having a charged one-kill attack to the basic pistol having increased accuracy, the mod ensures that there will be a particular application for every weapon. Aside from that, it will also give you a chance to rethink your strategies across City 17.
The only problem with this mod is that by changing enemy behavior and spawn locations, it leaves certain parts of the map empty. These long walks add unnecessary length and fatigue whenever you have to pass through them. What makes this worse is that there are certain segments of the map that are absolutely empty enemy-wise. Other than this minor gameplay pacing concern, the mod works exceptionally well.
Definitely raising the HL2 bar
If you’re the type of gamer that appreciates a strategic element thrown in, instead of mindless shooting, Raising the Bar: Redux offers a good incentive for you to revisit your Half-Life 2. Although it only covers a certain set of maps, it is enough to create an entirely new experience for fans of the franchise. From weapons to opponents, it reinvents what Valve made with the original game. Recommended.
