Portable, private and flexible browser
QtWeb is an open source web browser, based on Nokia’s QT framework. It is portable, and an interesting alternative to its more famous competitors.
The focus of QtWeb seems to be on privacy and flexibility. With privacy, there’s a button to turn on private browsing on the main toolbar. This stops pages being recorded in history, searches being added to the pop up menu in the Google search box, and cookies being saved. Turning it on and off with the button makes it more accessible than the system in Firefox. There’s also a reset option, which removes all of your history and settings, returning QtWeb to its original state.
QtWeb’s flexibility comes from its movable toolbars. You can drag them around, dock them on any edge of the browser, or even keep them outside the browser window, on your desktop. This means you can have a really clean browser window, while maintaining the functions you need in a toolbar.
The browser itself is fast, and works just as well as any of the other major browsers. While older versions didn’t render video well, version 3.0 does so perfectly, making at excellent alternative to Firefox et al.
Visually, you can choose from a range of styles that change ‘on the fly’, without restarting, although we must point out that all the styles are very similar! Despite that, it has a clean and attractive design. Its major innovation is the draggable toolbars, but otherwise while it’s good, it’s probably not enough to make you change your browser.
QtWeb is a neat little browser. It does everything the competition does, and is really fast and lightweight.
