Find your way back to love
Of Love and Eternity is a free adventure video game wherein you must reunite with your deceased beloved after you had been unfairly slain. Developed by Winston Powell a.k.a. acornbringer, this 3D retro PSX-style game is a single-player atmospheric dark fantasy journey that delivers creepiness rather than outright jump scares.
At first glance, Of Love and Eternity looks similar to Dark Souls in theme but is more of a beautiful gothic survival horror game made as a homage to the PS1 game era. This demo is in active development and is considered the alpha version.
Love conquers all
The story of Of Love and Eternity begins when your character, an unnamed knight, arrives to find his beloved fatally stabbed. Grieving over her, you end up dying at the hands of her murderer, as well. However, you soon wake up and discover that years had passed. Now you’re a soul inhabiting a skeletal form, who must find the lost soul of your beloved.
Unfortunately, this demo doesn’t have an in-game tutorial for its controls but you can easily figure them out through trial and error. The WASD keys are for movement and the mouse is for controlling your camera. The Shift key is for running while Spacebar is for attacking. To switch camera views, press Left Ctrl. To zoom, click the right mouse button. The game also supports controllers.
Graphics-wise alone, this game is absolutely gorgeous with its late PSX art style. The in-game assets look unique and iconic—most especially the playable character. However, there’s not much in terms of the combat gameplay. The demo only features the first area and you just wander around the linear paths, taking in the atmosphere. The only NPC around doesn’t give you much narrative exposition either.
Has great potential
All in all, Of Love and Eternity is a promising horror game, especially with how carefully crafted the art and atmospheric noise are. You don’t get to see some of the gameplay mechanics here, though. Plus, it could use more NPC interactions when you’re starting out—especially for understanding a bit more about the world that awaits you outside. However, this is one that’s definitely worth a try.
