A combat game about the immune system

Macrophage is a free game about the human immune system. The player takes on the role of a white blood cell and must fight endless waves of germs to keep the body safe and keep viruses at bay. This combat game has a wave shooter style. It is offered as a “name your own price” release, which means players can support the developer if they want to.

The gameplay of Macrophage is similar to other shooter games, like Galaxy Shooter – Space Attack and Shock Troopers. Curiously, the visuals in the game, while they are very well done, are at odds with the game’s story.

Fight endless waves of enemies

The player takes control of a lone white blood cell when playing Macrophage. They are responsible for fighting off the endless waves of germs and viruses attacking the body. Despite the storyline, the player’s character takes the form of a woman instead of a blood cell. Using various sci-fi weaponry, the player can use melee attacks and a wide range of guns to fight off their enemies.

Progression and upgrades

As the game progresses, the player can unlock new, more powerful weapons that they can use to fight the increasingly difficult waves of enemies. There is also a tutorial area — the garage — for practicing and getting to grips with the gaming controls.

Disjointed theme and visuals

Macrophage does not have any obvious problems regarding the gameplay. However, there is an odd disconnect between the game’s visuals and the premise. While the player is supposed to be a white blood cell that fights germs, the visuals show a human who fights robots within a science fiction setting. Still, this does not affect the gameplay.
