An open-source podcast player for PC
Kodkast is an open-source and free audio program for PC devices that was created by indie developer, Ricky Kresslein. This multimedia software is a lightweight but powerful player that you can use on your computer to be able to listen to all of your favorite podcasts online.
iTunes and Spotify are some of the best options available for people who want to listen to podcasts online. They are fully-featured players with a wide selection of channels to choose from. Kodkast is similarly a podcast player app, but it takes a simpler, more minimal approach in its design and use case.
How do I use Kodkast?
Upon first launch, Kodkast features a clean and simple user interface. It employs a vertical playlist-style main window, and you choose between light and dark themes for its appearance. To add a new podcast, click on the “Add Podcast” button located at the bottom. Then, you can paste the channel feed URL link in the textbox to add it to your library.
You can also use the iTunes search option, which pulls results directly from its database, to look for a specific channel. Alternatively, you can click on the iTunes Top 100 button to browse some of the most popular podcasts on iTunes. Choose the one that you like and click on the “Subscribe” button below to add that podcast channel to your playlist.
Kodkast’s play screen is rather simplistic. You have play/pause and fast-forward and rewind buttons, as well as an option to change its playback speed. Do note, however, that you will need VLC installed for this player to work. Some things that need work are the lack of offline playback and support for OPML files for importing/exporting podcast feeds from external sources.
A basic podcast player app
Overall, if you just want a simple and no-frills player to listen to your favorite podcasts on, Kodkast is worth taking a look at. It’s lightweight and easy to use, it has iTunes search built-in, and it’s free. It doesn’t have a lot of extra features, but it gets the job done for basic needs and uses.
