A free Doom II mod featuring zombies

In the Flesh Mod allows players of Doom II to play new maps featuring new monsters. They are based on a zombie theme, with the characters being inspired by those in the game Zombi. The game even has non-hostile civilians running around the custom-made maps.

This Doom 2 mod has its own maps with assets pulled from the original game. The monsters and enemies are all freshly designed, plus there are custom weapons and several original pieces of music. The developers took inspiration from Night of the Dead when populating the maps with enemies.

Mowing down many enemies

The draw of zombie horror shooting games is the fact you can slaughter many enemies at once. This game allows you to kill herds of zombies and doesn’t make them too durable, meaning it is easier to gain a feeling of accomplishment when they go down quickly.

Mixed map design

A small team worked on this mod, which is probably why some of its map designs are a little lacking. Some are too open, which removes any challenge or tension, and some have too many corners or hiding places. On the other hand, there are interior rooms that are decorated far better than in the original game.

Adding civilians was a masterstroke

Most people do not think of civilians and non-hostiles when they play a Doom game, which is why their inclusion in this mod is so brilliant. This is especially true when you see the zombies attack the civilians before attacking you.

The start of the game is its weakest part

The sad part is that the zombie FPS is of reasonably high quality, but the starting zombies are so formless and undefined that they look like walking blocks of pink cheese. Even something as simple as a little more shading would have improved these starting enemies. The later enemies are pretty well designed by comparison.
