ID Maderas: A Mobile App for Forensic Wood Identification

UNODC, in collaboration with the Global Programme for Combating Wildlife and Forest Crime and national counterparts, has developed a mobile application called ID Maderas. The purpose of this app is to increase knowledge and forensic identification capabilities of wood, and act as a tool that facilitates on-site identification of the most traded wood species for law enforcement agencies. This application allows responsible authorities to access technical information easily and dynamically on their mobile phones.

The app includes technical inputs on wood identification from the Criminal Justice Responses to Forest Crimes project in Peru and references collected from national specialists in responsible authorities and academia. Technical materials on different wood species have been transferred to the mobile interface with interactive functions. The app can also be used as a tool to generate awareness and training for frontline officials. ID Maderas is free to download and available on Android.
