A charming retro adventure game
Frog Familiar is a free adventure title created by an indie developer who goes by the moniker, dotmoon. It’s a 2D top-down game that features retro pixel art and a minimalistic, yet charming presentation. In it, players take control of a little frog collecting ingredients and items for a kindly witch.
Just like with Proteus, Frog Familiar is more about a fun and relaxing experience than fast-paced action gameplay. Instead, it focuses on exploration and the interactions players will have with various characters they will encounter all throughout the game that will ask for their help.
Ribbit ribbit
In Frog Familiar, you will be taking control of a little frog that works for a kindly witch. You are tasked with collecting ingredients and items that she needs in order to brew a variety of magical potions and other concoctions. Wander through the forest in search of mushrooms, herbs, and other necessities. Along the way, you’ll encounter humans, spirits, and other creatures, all needing your help.
There is an emphasis on exploration and interactions as you take on multiple side quests and solve various puzzles. The game does not include any combat mechanic or offer any sense of danger as you play. Instead, it lets you explore and enjoy it at your own pace. It even offers multiple endings based on how much you’ve done and completed in your playthrough.
What’s more, there are over 20 original audio tracks to help you relax as you play. There are also 10 costumes that you can discover, encouraging you to really explore every inch of the game. Now, before you start playing, just know that a typical playthrough is relatively short, clocking in about an hour or so. It won’t matter that much to most given the multiple endings available, though.
Chill and adorable
If you want to take a break from all the grinding and engaging in fast-paced action games, give Frog Familiar a try. It offers a complete 180 experience that focuses more on letting you relax and just take in the sights and sounds. It’s charmingly cute, chill, and just a lot of fun to play. Plus, its multiple endings will keep you engaged. Highly recommended.
