Speed through the streets of London
Fast & Furious 6: The Game is a racing game based around the action movie of the same name. The gameplay differs from previous Fast and Furious games but it’s still fun to play, especially if you like the movie.
A different driving experience
Fast & Furious 6: The Game is different from previous games in the series in that you don’t steer the car around a circuit like in a traditional driving game. Instead, the gameplay is more like Drag Racing or StreetDrag 3D. So, it’s all about hitting the throttle at the right moment, timing your gear shifts to perfection, and activating drift when cornering.
In each challenge of Fast & Furious 6: The Game you must travel from point A to point B in the quickest time possible, either against a rival or against the clock. You can play out the story mode where you race against characters from the movie, take part in drift or drag challenges, and pit yourself against others on the drag and drift leaderboards.
Though you might find the gameplay boring if you prefer high octane driving sims such as Need for Speed Most Wanted or Asphalt, Fast & Furious 6: The Game can be enjoyable, especially if you enjoy Drag Racing-style games. It can be frustrating having to wait for your fuel levels to increase before you’re allowed to compete again (this can be remedied with an in-app purchase though, which can refill or expand your gas-tank).
There are plenty of cars to be unlocked in Fast & Furious 6: The Game, ranging from the 1970 Dodge Charger to modern supercars. Each one is upgradeable through game currency which can be earned or purchased.
Good handling
In Fast & Furious 6: The Game you don’t need to constantly be in control of your vehicle. Cars drive automatically once you’ve hit the Launch button then it’s just a case of flipping up the stick shift when the revs hit the right point (indicated by the rev counter on the dashboard). In the drift races you need to hit and hold down the drift button when you come into a corner and then release when you’re off the corner.
It sounds easy in theory but Fast & Furious 6: The Game is very unforgiving and if you mistime just one thing it can ruin your whole race. There are some hints and pointers to help you such as messages warning when to first change gear, and the marking of drift entry and exit points. Still, lots of practice is required to get it right, which adds to the long-term appeal of Fast & Furious 6: The Game.
Hot wheels
Fast & Furious 6: The Game is arguably the most polished drag racing game for mobile devices right now. The 3D cars look very true to life and the backdrops to the races – set around London – are impressively detailed without being a distraction.
One of the annoying things about Fast & Furious 6: The Game is that it requires an internet connection to download data when you launch the game, which can be irritating if you don’t want to use precious megabytes from your data plan while you’re playing outside. On the plus side, this does let you keep an eye on the multiple leaderboards and see your opponents add-ons in the Race Wars mode.
The verdict
Some will be disappointed that Fast & Furious 6: The Game isn’t a straight driving sim, while others will moan the waiting around/purchasing that’s needed to keep playing through the game.
If you ‘re prepared to put these issues aside, Fast & Furious 6: The Game is actually an enjoyable racing game that requires plenty of skill to master.
