Dull Grey: A Retro-Futuristic Visual Novel About Life Choices
Dull Grey is an award-winning visual novel game developed by Sometimes You. It is a game that tells a story about a mother and son in a world controlled by the Progress-program. The game is set in a retro-futuristic world where the drama of everyday life is shown against the background of foggy mountains and grey pipes.
Dull Grey has an unusual mechanic where a single choice leads to different game endings. You will be making one and the same choice again and again, deciding who the son should become – a lamplighter or a tallyman. At first, it may seem that the situation leaves you no choice at all, but take a moment to think it over and then, perhaps, you’ll see your story in full color.
The visual style of Dull Grey traces back to Soviet graphics of the 20s, and it is inspired by the worlds of Strugatsky brothers, Dostoevsky’s works, and Tarkovsky’s movies. It has won several awards, including the most innovative game of Games Cup 2019 and ‘Best Use of Multimedia’ award winner in XYZZY Awards 2019.
