Free tool for creating Cuphead levels
Cuphead Maker is a free utility that lets you create your own levels, heavily inspired by the hit PC game Cuphead. This game development app has a user-friendly interface and contains a host of assets exactly like in the Studio MDHR game. Put platforms and background elements on the side-scrolling action game. You can even add enemies and control how they move.
The best part of Cuphead Maker is that it accurately remakes the game and captures its unique 1930s animation style. The animation is also smooth, although it could use more presets, putting it on par with Game Maker.
Develop your own run-and-gun
Cuphead Maker heavily borrows elements from Cuphead, an indie run-and-gun game that became an instant hit thanks to its unique visuals and extremely challenging gameplay. Visually, this indie game dev also uses the same rubber hose animation style, which was how animated feature films were made during the 1920s and the 1930s. Cuphead became popular for using mature and outright frightening character designs in this art style.
As for the game dev app, it has various assets for you to choose from. From platforms to enemies, and even additional background elements. You also get to control how they move, such as floating platforms going up and down and more. As mentioned, all the available assets fit the same aesthetic which makes the resulting custom level feel like they fit with the original Cuphead game.
It goes without saying that this app lets you test your creation, with intuitive controls and the same smooth animation as the original. The only restriction with this app is in the selection of its assets. It only offers a singular background and a limited selection, from assets to animation options. Although it can use more materials, the animation is already on point.
A fun mobile experience
Although Cuphead does not yet have its official mobile port, Cuphead Maker is a great way to bring the experience right now. You create your own level: from the platforms to the enemies. Everything is based on your creative input, although it remains limited in terms of selections. Still, since it already has the art style and the animation pinned down, adding more assets will only improve the experience.
