Free voxel-art adventure
CubeCraft is a free-to-play adventure from SayGames Ltd. This open-world game, rendered entirely in 3D voxel art style, lets you experience the full Minecraft experience on mobile. Gather resources, explore the massive world, and build structures and mechanisms. Expect a colorful rendered world with slightly different character designs from the Mojang smash hit.
Despite feeling unoriginal, CubeCraft is a good voxel game for mobile. It boasts intuitive control and a massive open world, although not as large as Minecraft Pocket Edition (MCPE). Also, it falls slightly behind in terms of optimization, with players reporting a couple of rendering issues.
MCPE copy in lower resolution
With CubeCraft, existing players will inevitably make comparisons. For starters, they have almost the same range of activities, although this SayGames entry has a slightly smaller world. You can mine different resources, which you can use to build simple structures or elaborate machines. You can break existing blocks to mine materials within them, which you can then combine to create more complex substances.
For the visuals, expect a lower resolution compared to MCPE. Aside from the instantly recognizable voxel art style, this game’s textures are more limited. However, it also gives the game its unique appeal, looking like a simplified version of Minecraft. With solid colors, it looks like a simpler, more retro sandbox experience. With intuitive controls, it is the perfect package for a casual world-building game.
While the game is promising for mobile gamers, it still has a couple of optimization issues. Players regularly report the game failing to render late-game levels. For example, playing at level 18 and above causes certain segments of the map to just disappear, leaving the player to fall. This requires the player to restart the app and reload from their last save point.
A promising mobile alternative
What sets CubeCraft apart from the flood of Minecraft knockoffs in the mobile app market is that it manages to use its lower resolution to create a unique aesthetic. Combined with its slightly modified designs for characters, it becomes an original yet familiar sandboxing experience. However, you would want to hold off on this one until its severe late-game issues are addressed.
