Souls style Japanese dark RPG
Code Vein is a dark third-person action RPG. With combat similar in style to Dark Souls, players embark on a dark adventure to save the last remnants of humanity from soulless ghouls known as the Lost.
Lost souls
A mysterious apocalypse known as the Thorns of Judgement has brought humanity to the very edge of destruction, creating hordes of monster enslaved to their bloodlust. The few remnants of humanity have gathered together in a final stronghold known as the Vein. Players choose an RPG-style character and then progress through a series of interconnected levels, earning experience and weapons as they go to become stronger. Gameplay is extremely reminiscent of the Dark Souls franchise, with combat requiring patience and experience alongside a high difficulty. Code Vein brings its own innovations with a partner system and the ability to steal abilities from enemies alongside an anime inspired overall look and story.
Combat over story
Code Vein is a fairly good addition to the long list of Dark Souls inspired titles. As expected of such a game, the combat is the primary focus. The dark theme and storyline offer up some tense moments but the reliance on anime cliches for plot devices may be an obstacle for some and a selling point for others.
