Semi-total conversion for CNC: Red Alert 2
CnC: Final War is a game utility developed by SMxReaver. As the name suggests, this game is a mod for the game Command and Conquer: Red Alert 2- Yuri’s Revenge. This app is a semi-conversion tool that adds content to the expansion pack of the popular real-time strategy video game.
Final War offers a gameplay style similar to RA2 but it does enough to differentiate itself from other mods. It also offers substantial improvements over the base RA2, including new units and sides. Although, it could use diversity in its army lists and variation in its offered units.
What does the mod offer?
CnC: Final War offers a story based on RA lore. However, it is not a re-imagining of RA2 as it does not involve a sudden soviet resurrection but a long-term buildup and rise to power. Think RA2 at a sort of Ghost Recon Advanced Warfare tech level. The concept is different enough to give the factions a fun flavor and allows creative license to try new things.
Speaking of factions, this game allows you to choose one of the three primary factions and then choose sub-factions in-game from the defense menu. Moreover, all factions can elect to choose one of the two generic sub-factions, the American corporate Acheron-Tech or Mercenaert Warlords sub-factions. Both of these offer a variety of fun strategies to mix and match with existing factions.
As mentioned, the mod also brings new cool units and sides. The secondary economy is also implemented for all factions via refinery upgrades. Moreover, it allows slower and more defensive play styles while rewarding map control and aggression. However, it could use more diversity in its army lists. Additional sub-factions, unit variation, and story elements could also make it grow and prosper.
Is the mod good?
CnC: Final War stands on its own as a breakaway for the RA2 modding scene. The game expansions offer a new storyline and other improvements. Moreover, it allows players to mix and match factions and subfactions to find which combination works. Sure, it could use more diversity in its army list and other units. Nevertheless, it is a great choice for new and old players alike.
