Kick down doors in this free FPS game
Anger Foot is a fast-paced action video game about kicking down doors and fighting enemies. Centering around quick reaction time and resourceful thinking, Anger Foot is simple to pick up and harder to master, akin to games like Katana Zero or Hotline Miami. Free to play, it’s a fast, frenetic sweep through tight confines and corridors.
Robbie Fraser, Luc Wolthers, and Jason Sutherland developed Anger Foot for the 2020 7dfps game jam. The result was a 3D single-player indie game for Windows: An addicting sprint through small waves of animal-themed enemies. These small encounters are separated by doors that players can kick open to send flying into opponents. The free game runs well on Windows and Linux, and has no DRM.
Win with gun, door, and foot
The controls of Anger Foot are simple, made to match the simple premise of the game. Players can learn how to play with the game’s tutorial. W, A, S, and D keys are used for movement, with E being used to kick. The mouse controls the camera, and guns can be fired with the left-click of the mouse. When your gun’s clip inevitably runs out, you can then throw the gun with the right-click.
Scores are calculated based on how quickly you can clear the short levels and how many adversaries you defeat along the way. The main means of attack in Anger Foot are the guns you pick up along the way and your foot. Enemies are instantly subdued with either a couple of bullets or a swift kick to center mass.
Anger Foot is a high-adrenaline action game. Skilled players will be able to shoot or kick explosive barrels into groups of enemies for multi-kills. The game’s design, however, places a much higher priority on properly executing kicks. Explosive barrels aren’t guaranteed to be in each room, and the game’s guns only house one clip’s worth of bullets that run out quickly and must be replaced upon emptying.
Kicking in Anger Foot is the best option. It eliminates enemies in a single hit and sends projectiles like doors and explosive barrels flying. Your foot also doesn’t rely on ammunition to work. While the game is short, with only ten levels of encounters, the real challenge is trying to beat your old times and scores. Every level is replayable, and players can post their best times.
There’s not much variety in the types of enemies faced in Anger Foot. They’re odd bipedal animal archetypes wearing street clothes like hoodies and jeans. Some will fire at you with uzis or handguns (which you can afterward loot off their bodies), others come at you with a baseball bat or pipe. Although the attacks are limited to only two, the game’s pace is so fast that it’s enough to keep you on your toes.
Anger Foot vs Hotline Miami
Anger Foot is similar to fast-paced games like Katana Zero and Hotline Miami. Both are one-hit, one-kill kinds of games that give the player as little health as the enemies. Katana Zero is doubly similar in the sense that the player character’s main weapon is melee, but Katana Zero is a much bigger, much more complex game. Katana Zero cleverly uses a time-slowing mechanic and dodge, while Anger Foot is more simplistic.
Hotline Miami uses guns much like Anger Foot, but it’s a top-down experience whereas Anger Foot is a frames-per-second game. Both Hotline Miami and Katana Zero are also longer games, and each offers an extensive plot and characters. Anger Foot, on the other hand, doesn’t have much of a plot, but it never feels like that was its intent. The similarities it shares with Hotline Miami and Katana Zero are more based on the fast pac of the gameplay.
A short but intense game
Anger Foot is a straightforward first-person shooter game that’s violent, fast-paced, and fun. The game is short, and most players can beat each level in 15 minutes or less. Anger Foot is being regularly updated, and it has recently received new music tracks, enemies, weapons, and levels to keep it fresh and to increase its shelf life.
Although simplistic, Anger Foot is still a satisfying experience. The controls are easy to learn but hard to master, which creates the perfect balance in the player skill gap. It’s exciting to kick down a door and immediately start taking down whoever is waiting on the other side. Between that and the adrenaline-pumping soundtrack, Anger Foot is worth downloading and playing through at least once, especially since it’s free.
