An improved mod for Heart of Darkness

Historical Project Mod Plus (HPMP) is a free-to-play game utility developed by modder Marshawn. This mod was created for the real-time strategy game Victoria 2: Heart of Darkness. The HPMP builds upon the original Historical Project Mod, fixing the bugs from its predecessor while expanding custom mechanics.

For players who’ve tried the original HMP mod, Historical Project Mod Plus doesn’t do much in the way of new units, factions, or techs. You might also want to check out other mods for Heart of Darkness, such as Wakracia: Steel and Coal Mod or the Victoria Universalis Mod.

Historically accurate

For those unfamiliar, the Historical Project Mod Plus (HPMP) improves on the original Historical Project Mod. The original mod reworks the economic system for Heart of Darkness to better reflect the economic realities of the Victorian era and before the start of the First World War. It also adds a lot of other historical details that make the game more accurate.

The HPMP mod builds on its predecessor, often taking the strengths of other mods. For example, the AI behavior in the first HMP mod was replaced with ones patterned from the popular Crimeamod. Also, players are now given the ability to toggle certain game conditions such as disabling subsidies from AI opponents and reducing infamy. Other options, like factory subsidies and sending money, revolutionize the economic aspect of the game.

Lastly, there are new options that specifically change the direction of the Mexican-American War, allowing Mexico to cancel or refute Manifest Destiny and giving the possibility of the Latin American nation to conquer at least the West Coast on its own. Unfortunately, it suffers from a few optimization issues, where increased assets in the game could cause lags and crashes for lower-end systems.

A worthy continuation of a beloved mod

Overall, Historical Project Mod Plus is a good mod for Heart of Darkness. It builds upon the great concept introduced by its predecessor. It further tweaks the economic systems and provides players with unprecedented control over major financial aspects that could affect the entire game. However, while it fixes the bugs of the first HMP, it comes with a few bugs of its own.
