Use hammer in case of emergency
Red Faction: Armageddon is the latest in the sci-fi action series, famed for its scenery destruction ‘GeoMod’ technology. The game now uses a Gears of War style third person perspective.
Set fifty years after the last in the series, Guerrilla, on the colonized planet of Mars, which has been ruined by the destruction of a terraforming machine. Mining still exists, and it is in these underground environments that most of Red Faction: Armageddon takes place.
Destructible environments remain part of Red Faction: Armageddon – your character Darius wields a massive hammer that’s loads of fun to use against walls, doors and of course enemies. You also carry a ‘Nano Forge’ device, that allows you to repair destroyed features such as stairways. You may find you have to repair scenery you accidentally destroyed to get through the game! There is also an excellent Magnet Gun, that allows for some creative destruction by the player.
While the combat can be fun, and the game is quite solid it isn’t overly impressive. The graphics won’t amaze you, and the sound and character design is pretty generic. Nevertheless, Red Faction: Armageddon will please fans of the series, and the destructive gameplay is fun despite the somewhat generic presentation.
It might not blow you away, but the heavy duty destruction of Red Faction: Armageddon should be enough for an enjoyable sci-fi blast.
