Remastered mythological RTS
Age of Mythology: Retold is a premium strategy game from World’s Edge and Xbox Game Studios for PC. This is a remastered version of the 2002 real-time strategy game of the same name. As the nonhistorical spinoff from the Age of Empires franchise, it lets you build your civilization with gods’ help.
With remastered visuals and smoother animations, Age of Mythology: Retold is a fitting tribute to the classic RTS that seamlessly combines fantasy elements with the rigid gameplay of the AoE franchise, making it comparable to Age of Empires III: Complete Collection or Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition.
Smite enemies once more
Like its original incarnation, Age of Mythology: Retold plays much like Age of Empires. You choose a civilization, build a base and an army, and be the last player standing. However, it features an additional resource, Favor, which is used to curry favor with the gods. From ensuring a bountiful harvest to casting tsunamis and earthquakes, it depends on the particular deity you choose across different ages.
While the original civilizations—Greeks, Norse, and Egyptians—are definitely included, players should look out for the additional two civilizations: the Atlanteans and the Chinese. As a remaster, expect to play the classic RTS in higher resolutions. More detailed character models, improved textures, and more vivid colors are now available on top of remastered voice lines and sound effects, plus the campaigns that players knew and loved.
Players looking for entirely new content might be disappointed despite being remastered. Aside from updated game mechanics, it doesn’t feature any other new materials. If its sister entries’ Definitive Editions are any indicators, it’s hard to expect new maps or campaigns—although a future release doesn’t entirely discount the possibility. Additionally, bugs or glitches exploited by players in the original are no longer here.
Bringing a classic to modern systems
As a faithful remaster of the original, Age of Mythology: Retold definitely delivers in its mission of bringing the classic RTS game to modern gamers. It serves as a good break from historical strategy warfare by having the ability to invoke the power of the gods to watch as your enemies get plagued or carried away by a tornado. Get ready to relive the original game, highly recommended.
