Medieval sword-fighting game

Hellish Quart is a physics-based 3D sword-fighting game developed and published by Kubold. Set in the 17th century Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, this game will have you duel with other warriors using sabers, broadswords, rapiers, and many other blades. It uses thousands of motion-captured fencing techniques through a mocap of actual sword fighters to give the players a realistic experience.

‌Hellish Quart offers single-player, arcade, and local multiplayer campaigns, so you can either play it solo or with friends. Besides that, it also offers a more hands-on VR option that gives you the ultimate sword-fighting gameplay experience.

Become the best swordsman

What players can expect from Hellish Quart is gritty sword-fighting action. More than the wide selection of blades, there are also several characters and sword styles shown off in this game. The developers also put in a lot of attention to detail when it comes to the art style. Every item of clothing and sword is copied from real-life historical samples and then rendered and imported into the 3D engine.

With this, you will be playing as Polish Hussars and French Musketeers. Although, what’s most impressive about the game is how brutal and responsive the gameplay is. You can chop people’s hands and even their heads off if you put in a well-timed strike. The game uses active ragdolls and all damage is calculated with real-time physics. There are four attack angles represented by four gamepad buttons.

You can also combine different attacks to land a deadly blow. If you are not attacking, your character will automatically try to hold guard. Of course, to win, you need to use proper timing, speed, and technique — just like in real-life fencing. As mentioned, the game has a single-player campaign and an arcade mode. There is a local multiplayer mode if you want to whack your friends with cool swords.

What’s new after patch updates?

Ever since the game’s Early Access release, multiple patches have been added to Hellish Quart to improve its interface and introduce new, interesting features. Some of these include the eight game-themed Steam trading cards, half of which will be present in the player’s Steam Library and the rest can be acquired by trading with other players. Completing a set will give you fun rewards. On the other hand, a new character is also added to the game — Yendrek, a Carpathian Highlander equipped with a shepherd’s ax.

Realistic action experience

Hellish Quart takes the fighting game genre to a whole new level. Besides the gritty sword dueling gameplay, the game also boasts realistic design and animation that hardcore players will definitely dig. Learning the techniques in sword fighting can be difficult, however, but the steep learning curve is worth it. Although, the mechanics and graphics may seem too brutal for younger players.
