Go on a date with weapons

Boyfriend Dungeon is an indie game from Kitfox Game. This is a dating simulation that allows you to pursue romance and go on dates. The catch is your other half are weapons, such as sword, dagger, and polearm.

More than a dating sim, Boyfriend Dungeon is also a dungeon crawler. Taking place in an urban fantasy setting, you will explore dungeons and fight enemies together with your weapon. However, the game is still short despite having two gameplays. There are free DLCs you can add to extend the game, but it will only bump it up to a few hours.

Fight and date

In Boyfriend Dungeon, you will roleplay a person who has never been on a date before. In the game, you are sent to a cute beach town for the summer to find love. However, the dating hotspots are in “dunjs” or dungeons. You will have to explore these locations to collect money and, of course, find romance. This is where the unique side of the game comes in.

You won’t be dungeon-crawling alongside another person. Instead, you will pair up with a human partner, who can transform into a sentient weapon. Then, outside of dungeons, you can date your partner in visual novel-style sequences. By going on dates, you can learn more about your weapon/human partner. Each has its own intriguing storylines and surprising twists. More than that, dating them can also increase their power.

However, while the dating part makes the game unique, some moments in the romantic journey get a little bumpy. The characters are inconsistent with their available dialogue option. The romance also escalates far too quickly. As mentioned, the main game is also too short, clocking only at five hours with its two “dunjs” and one boss fight. There are DLCs you can download for free to extend its game though.

May not be anyone’s type

Overall, Boyfriend Dungeon offers a unique take on dating simulation. It adds a cool, combat-heavy spin to the genre by allowing you to explore dungeons and pursue romances. What makes it unique is that you go on dates with your weapon. However, the inconsistent and sometimes forced interactions, as well as the limiting dating structure, can be disappointing to some. It also doesn’t help that the game is too short.
