Hands-On Equations 2: An Ideal Introduction to Algebra for Students
Hands-On Equations 2 is an Android app that serves as an introduction to algebra for elementary and middle school students. Developed by Henry Borenson, this education and reference app is the next level of Hands-On Equations Level 1, designed for students who have already completed it. The app teaches students how to solve equations involving the white pawn, blue pawn, and red cubes. The white pawn is an unknown like the blue pawn, and the value of the white pawn is the opposite of that of the blue pawn. The app uses the notation of an x with a crossbar through it to represent the white pawn, which is also known as “star.”
The program consists of video introductions followed by two examples and ten exercises for each lesson. Students must watch the video before attempting the examples and exercises. The app provides a sample YouTube video, which gives an insight into the lessons. The video instruction for each lesson enables the user to continue with the success and enjoyment they had with the Level 1 app as they solve even more challenging equations. This app is a full version and is an excellent tool for students struggling with algebra in high school.
