The most ancient and holy temple of India, known as the Somnath Mahadev temple, is located in Gujarat. It is the first among the twelve jyotirlingam in India and one of the holiest places in the country. According to the Hindu scriptures, the holy city of Somnath was created by Lord Shiva himself. It is also called ‘Somnath Jyotirlingam’ and the holy city ‘Kumbhoj’.
When this temple was built, it is said that the holy city of Somnath was built in the shape of a conch shell. This was a symbol of the supremacy of Shiva and it also signifies the conch shell that the Vedic god of wind, Vayu, uses to give sacred blessings.
Somnath is one of the most sacred places in India. It is considered to be the first jyotirlingam in the world.
