What is Chemistry?

The science of matter and energy. Chemical reactions take place on a wide range of Earth-related materials, including metals, non-metals, and organic and inorganic compounds, which are classified as elements and compounds, respectively.

When elements combine, they form the basic building blocks of life on Earth, the compounds, which are the basis of all life on the planet. Some of the chemical reactions that take place are very familiar, such as the formation of metals and minerals, the breaking and forming of chemical bonds, and the extraction of minerals from the earth. But there are many others that are less familiar.
