FluentU makes U Fluent

Signing up for FluentU give you access to a massive library of native language videos in six languages to help you learn a new language.

Listen and learn

After downloading the FluentU app and signing up for the service, all that is left is to pick a language and a level to start learning.

The basic premise is simple, you watch videos in the native language you are learning and then follow up with tasks that demonstrates your comprehension. These include filling in the blanks and other simple exercises, so nothing too remarkable for anyone who has attempted app based learning before. An handy button at the top of the screen also lets you mark topics already known.

The home screen offers you a selection of themes appropriate to your level, with a tab at the top for your learned vocab. Tapping on any theme opens up a short series of lessons, each containing videos and exercises for you to move through at your leisure. Note that these must be downloaded independently – so do be aware of this if you are studying on the go.

Focus on your lessons

A now fairly standard layout has the settings icon at the top left of the screen. Tapping on this allows you to access your learned vocab, flashcards, and downloaded media directly. It also lets you switch between courses, language, and level if you are training in multiple languages at once.

If you progress beyond the elementary lessons in FluentU and start to challenge the intermediate levels, then a subscription fee is required to continue. These vary in price depending on level and duration. If you have progressed through the levels to this point and wish to continue it certainly make sense, but the value of the paid tier is entirely dependent on how well this teaching method works for you.

Get learning

FluentU offers a novel way to study on your mobile device, and is certainly worth trying for new learners, particularly if combined with an app like HelloTalk. If you are determined and it doesn’t work for you, however, then apps like Duolingo or Busuu are always on hand.
