Next-gen 2D platformer
Sonic Superstars is a premium arcade game from SEGA. This entry aims to bring back the classic 2D platforming experience that Sonic the Hedgehog was known for. In a refreshing return to its roots, players once again run through different stages, collect rings, and harness the power of the Emeralds. This time, however, you can choose to go solo or play with friends.
In this combination of high-resolution visuals with the classic, intuitive gameplay, Sonic Superstars is a game that caters to both new and returning fans of the franchise. Players can also check out Sonic Games or Sonic Utopia.
Modernizing the classic Sonic
The first thing to note about Sonic Superstars is its graphics. Right off the bat, it feels like a remastered version of the classic Sonic the Hedgehog titles. The vibrant colors and quality shading make the game feel like a fully 3D environment positioned for a 2D gameplay experience. Players can choose from four characters—Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy Rose—each having unique abilities.
As you run through the Northstar Islands, the story brings you face-to-face with Dr. Eggman, this time working with Fang. Helping you on your quest are Chaos Emeralds, which give you varying abilities to help you progress the story. A new addition to this entry is its four-player cooperative mode. Three other players can drop in and out of a level to cross gaps or help you fight enemies.
Still, as a return to its original form, it also comes back with the same wall for new players. Some stages are both fast-paced and challenging, which can make them unappealing to casual players. Other than this minor learning curve, expect a larger and more dynamic sidescrolling running experience with this Sonic title. The controls and the visuals do a great job of bringing its signature gameplay back to life.
Sonic for the new generation
Sonic Superstars checks all the boxes for longtime fans of the franchise, while also offering a good mix of familiarity and challenge for new players. Using the same gameplay concept but with updated graphics and game mechanics, this revitalizes the franchise to keep up with the changing times. A few levels could get too much for newcomers but are absolute treats for those who played the original titles. Recommended.
