Run-and-gun Metroidvania-style game for PC

Kobold Siege is a free action game made by indie dev Stopsignal for PC. It’s a run-and-gun-style 2D platformer wherein players will take control of a kobold and help her siege a castle to find and rescue her kidnapped family and stolen eggs, while armed with only a gun.

Just like Hollow Knight and Dead Cells, Kobold Siege was inspired by Metroidvania games for its game design, featuring platforming mechanics and a variety of tough enemies to face. It boasts of a vibrant hand-drawn art style to complement its charming presentation.

What is it all about?

Originally made for the Newgrounds Egg Jam, Kobold Siege starts out with a kobold’s family being kidnapped and her eggs stolen. The angry dino decides to take on a whole castle armed with nothing more than a gun to help her rescue her family and retrieve her stolen eggs. Thus, begins an adventure filled with Metroidvania-style gameplay, fast-paced gunfights, and encounters with some funny and quirky characters.

The game offers two control layouts depending on which you’re more comfortable with. You can use your WASD or Arrow keys for movement. Then, you can press either J or Z to fire, and K or X to jump. Meanwhile, the L or C keys are used to aim or interact with objects and characters. Lastly, toggle fullscreen mode with your F key to round everything out.

Now, there are some issues that still need to be addressed as of this writing. There are some random music breaks out and visual glitches during gameplay. Also, some players might find it having a slight difficulty curve when they first start playing and familiarizing themselves with its controls and mechanics. Aside from those things, though, this is an all-around fun game to check out.

Taste thy fury

If you’re a fan of Metroidvania-style platformers and you’re looking for something new to play, Kobold is a fun and quirky game that is worth considering. It features charming graphics, challenging gameplay, and the addition of guns is a nice touch. It will be a little tough at first, especially with its controls, but it’s well worth it for the experience.
