Turn-based JRPG

Blue Reflection is a roleplaying game developed by Gust and published by Koei Tecmo. This game follows a young girl as she navigates her life as a high school student and as a Reflector. Taking her role, you will attend school and visit another world to fight monsters.

There are two areas of gameplay in Blue Reflection. During school time, you will do various missions to help your classmates. Once classes are over, you have free time to complete quests and character stories through the relationship system. However, in order to advance, you will collect certain points.

How do you play Blue Reflection?

Blue Reflection is a Japanese roleplaying game that puts you in the shoes of Hinako Shirai, a high school student. Hinako used to be a ballet dancer but can no longer dance due to a knee injury. She one day received a magical ability that enables her to visit another world called the Common and fight monsters. Hoping it could make her dance again, she accepted the duty.

As mentioned, there are two gameplay areas here. During your school life, you will interact with your classmates and deepen your relationship with them by solving their problems. Completing the missions will also reward you with powerups, although some give you evaluation points that progress the story. You can also choose to use your free time on dates to further your relationship. However, these scenes could use more depth.

As noted, you can also explore the other world called the Common, where you will spend most of your time doing missions. Here, you mainly search for items and fight battles with monsters. The battle system looks like the Atelier games, and three players fight through a turn-based system. Although, unlike other games, you don’t gain experience through battles. Moreover, you heal after every fight, making the experience so-so.

Is the game good?

Overall, Blue Reflection is a game worth diving into if you are into JRPGs. The game has its defining moments, such as great battle animation and art design. The gameplay is also intriguing and exciting to explore. However, don’t expect anything genre-defining. The game lacks more depth, and the battles aren’t that challenging. While it can entertain you, playing for more than an hour at a time can get boring.
