Hide and reveal folders instantly

It might sound like a crude security measure but probably one of the most effective ways of protecting your files is to simply hide them.

If no one can see a file or folder then you have little fear of it being accessed by prying eyes. That’s what you get with Xray Vision which allows you to easily hide or reveal files and folders in Finder. In reality, Xray Vision doesn’t do anything that you can’t do in OS X itself but it does make things a lot easier and gives you far more control over what’s hidden.

When you open Xray Vision, you’re presented with the main window where you can browse to the files you want to hide. Simple select the ones you want to hide to make them invisible or visible. Those that appear in Finder as red are invisible while black ones are visible. Use the “Toggle Visibility” button to switch between the two modes. The developers note that in OS X 10.4, you may have to restart Finder for changes to take effect.

Note that its a good idea to setup an ignore list of vital file and folders that you don’t want hidden. Also, make sure that you use Xray Vision with care as you’re effectively messing around with the file structure of OS X and could potentially damage your file system if used wrongly.

Xray Vision is a simple way to preserve the privacy of your folders and files but use it with care!
