Beautiful games
Cygames, Inc. is a Japanese video game development studio established in 2011. The company has produced mobile games from the start. Soon enough, it has also started making titles for console platforms. It even extended itself to its own anime studio for any animation adaptations. Some of its most famous games include Rage of Bahamut, The Idolmaster Cinderella Girls, Shadowverse, and Granblue Fantasy—the latter known as one of the highest-grossing mobile games ever.
Most of these titles make use of the gacha system, wherein you roll for character units that you can use on the battlefield. These games also mostly limit the player’s direct influence on the combat—most of the time being automated battles that rely on your character skill management. Some of these are turn-based combat games, but these make you feel more of a tactician than a warrior facing enemies head-on. Things are different with World Flipper, however. This game makes combat look like an arcade pinball machine.
Pinball madness
In World Flipper, your characters have to fight using the base mechanics of a pinball game. Pinball is a type of arcade game where points are scored by moving one or more metallic balls using paddles called flippers below. The primary objective of the game is to score as many points as possible, and different numbers of points are earned when the ball strikes different targets.
However, these targets are enemy monsters in World Flipper, and your goal is to defeat them by launching your characters across the field to attack them. World Flipper still uses RPG elements—you’ll quickly see familiar party roles like defenders and healers, and status effects and enemies guarding against attacks actually happen.
Much of this will be influenced by how you shoot your party around using the flippers, though, so while you’re not actively choosing when they attack, you can still decide where they’ll attack the enemy. World Flipper lets you do character-unique skills when you build up your combo gauge and combo skills when you pair up specific characters. It even has a co-op mode so you can party up with friends of up to 3.
Fly high and win
Surprisingly, World Flipper’s execution of its unique combat system works well and is quite enjoyable. The pinball action is fast. But since your character sprites are tiny pixel-art graphics that will remind you of classic JRPGs, it’s easy to focus on the action. The character designs for both full sprite and combat sprite are eye-catching, and they even have voice actors. Despite how simple it looks, there are strategies involved with World Flipper. Overall, this is a highly recommended game for gacha fans who’d like a new challenge in the role-playing genre.
