Get faster VPN speeds

WireGuard is an open-source VPN protocol that works to simplify the process of encrypting data. This security application promises to offer faster and leaner service than the protocols available today. It is extremely easy to configure and deploy as SSH and is even capable of roaming between IP addresses. The app is much smaller, simpler, and faster than either OpenVPN or IKEv2/IPSec—the prevalent VPN protocols used by popular commercial VPNs.

Simple yet swift

Aside from outpacing both OpenVPN and the already-fast IPsec protocols, WireGuard also wins in terms of usability. The app was built with ease of use in mind that even manual network configuration is quite simple when you deploy the protocol on a large scale. The app offers a streamlined approach to encryption. Instead of working with the very long, ready-made encryptions that most VPN apps use, WireGuard reassembles the elements that make up those algorithms in new ways.

The result is that users gain speed without losing security. WireGuard is also less bloated than OpenVPN. The app has only 4,000 lines of codes as opposed to OpenVPN, which takes up 100,000 lines of codes. This ensures regular and thorough auditing and improvement. It also means less vulnerability as compared with other protocols. The app is also comprehensively reviewable by single individuals.

However, despite its many positives, you should think thoroughly before switching to WireGuard. While there are various claims of the protocol yielding impressive speed test results, your experience might not match those due to stability issues. It is quite buggy and lacks some needed Windows drivers. Moreover, since it is an open-source program, you won’t have tech support as a safety net should you face issues.

Use with caution

When you are looking for a faster speed for your VPN, WireGuard is a good alternative protocol that you could try. This program offers a swift connection and ease of use. It sticks to strong yet simple ways of exchanging keys, verifying data, and transmitting data. However, there are a few stability issues that may pose potential security risks. You need to be aware of the risks when using the app and avoid ultra-sensitive uses, like torrenting.
