Compression, file mounting and more
WinMount is an interesting application that gives you the functionality of several programs in one, a handy attribute when it comes to file compression, decompression, mounting and management.
The WinMount interface is clear and uncluttered, and once you get the hang of the basics, is very easy to use. There is also a decent help file to turn to if you get stuck. The main purpose of the program is to save space, since a compressed file (or mounted virtual drive) takes up much less room than an uncompressed one.
The basic functions of WinMount are compressing and decompressing files, as well as “mounting” them via the WinMount system, which will allow you to access the files as if they were simply another drive, i.e. without decompression. WinMount also allows you to mount a blank drive or a CD/DVD ROM. If all this wasn’t enough, the program password protects your files and integrates into the context menu, which makes the process even easier. WinMount also has its own file format, .MOU, and functions with a large variety of other formats and files.
Once you get the purpose and function of WinMount sorted out in your mind, it is easy to see why some users, especially more advanced ones, would take advantage of the program’s space-saving features. Almost all users need a file compression tool, and although WinMount does indeed fulfill this function, its main attraction lies in more advanced functions, which will be of interest to more experienced users, especially those already familiar with the .ISO files used in Linux.
WinMount is a handy but advanced program that combines 2 or 3 tools in one.
